Friedrich Otto Xavier Wolters is the New Year's baby at the Slave Lake Health Complex. He beat all other contenders by coming into the world at 11:56 a.m. on Jan. 3, weighing 7 lbs. 3/4 oz. and measuring 49 centimetres in length. Mom Christina and dad Gordon Wolters of Canyon Creek will have plenty of shopping to do with all the gifts and gift certificates provided by local businesses. This is their first New Year's baby, but otherwise they're old hands - this little fellow is their fifth!

Cross country skiing got a big boost thanks to the hard work of a number of people and support of a few companies and organizations when the new Nine Mile Creek Interpretive Trails over the holidays. Located just south of Widewater, the first tow loops of what organizers hope will become an extensive trail system are open for skiing and getting a fair amount of use already.

Winterhawks beat Drayton
Slave Lake's senior men's hockey team earned a 6-4 victory over the Drayton Valley Wildcats Saturday in Slave Lake. The longtime rivals usually give each other a good game and this one turned out to be that, although it looked for a while as if the home team might win easily.
Wolves lose two to Whitecourt
Shorthand is not the way to go into Whitecourt if you're the Slave Lake Wolves. But thats what happened on the weekend and the Wolves have two losses to show for it.
