Trials for the Dene Games event of the ‘08 Arctic Winter Games were held in Slave Lake on the weekend. One of the contests involved gripping a Crisco-coated stick and trying to pull it away from your opponent. The winners join Team Alberta North at the games in Yellowknife in March.

Anglers Cup to go ahead in 2008
Alberta’s biggest walleye tournament is coming back to Slave Lake in 2008. Organizers of the Grizzly Ridge Honda Anglers Cup announced last week that contrary to the original intention to hold the tournament every two years, it would be going ahead again in June of this year.
The world according to Garratt
“It’s shaping up to be a very busy year,” says Denny Garratt, Reeve of the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River. “It would be nice if we only had a couple of major projects. But growth pressure has forced us into looking at more than a couple of priority items.”
You are leaving flavour country
Polling giant Ipsos-Reid, in a 2007 survey, indicated that 80 per cent of Albertans support smoke-free work places, 78 per cent support a ban on tobacco sales in pharmacies and 67 per cent support a ban on retail tobacco displays.
They must have done their homework. The Leader checked in on local businesses after the new legislation came into effect and heard few, if any, negative remarks concerning the new laws.

Pee Wee ‘A’ Thunder players Taylor Andres (#31) and Ethan Ball shut down a Whitecourt scoring attempt in their game on Saturday. The final score was 9 - 1 for Slave Lake. On Sunday the teams tangled again in Whitecourt, with the Thunder winning 2 - 0.

Midget girls go 3 - 1 in tournament
Slave Lake’s female Midget hockey team, the Thunder, had a successful weekend of games in High Prairie. They won three and lost only one in a tournament, good for second place overall.
Tough times for Wolves
The Slave Lake Wolves were hoping for better things when the Fort St. John Huskies came to town.
