Hey now, this sounds pretty cool. The Slave Lake Adult Education Committee is bringing in a 24-voice South African choir, sometime in June if we heard correctly. They’re from Soweto, the city that was in the news so much back in the days of apartheid. Look for more news about this rare opportunity in upcoming issues of The Leader.

Turns out there’s another radio station in Slave Lake. It’s YJLU, 107.5, and it’s affiliated with CIAM out of Fort Vermilion. We don’t want to reveal too much, because that’s coming up in a story next week. Ron Wood showed us the little YJLU studio here in town last week, where he records the weather reports. Stay tuned!

We were talking in the shop the other day about ice fishing on the big lake - specifically, how many fishinig shacks are on the entire lake? This is a relatively new phenomenon on Lesser Slave - not that people didn’t fish through the ice before, but 15 years ago there weren’t any huts off Widewater and Canyon Creek to speak of, and now there are lots. We’ve heard there are about 50 off Joussard, where last winter somebody had the bright idea to change the oil in his truck, leaving the old oil on the ice.
More on ice fishing in next week’s Leader.

We had a bit of excitement last Friday morning when a mouse showed up in the office. This has never happened before and seemed quite odd in the sterile office environment of downtown Slave Lake. We had in mind to expel the little fellow, but lost track of it when it went under a desk.

It’s looking like another mild winter. Have we even seen 30 below yet? What’ll we tell the grandkids?
