Guess who’s coming to town? Tom Higgins, the ex-coach of the Calgary Stampeders and before that the Edmonton Eskimos. He’s the guest speaker at the Chamber of Commerce’s business, employer and employee of the year awards on Feb. 15. How the Chamber landed Mr. Higgins we’re not sure, but he’s coming, they say, to speak on the topic of championship thinking. It starts at 7:00 p.m., but right now we’re not sure where, because that detail was omitted from the blurb the Chamber put out on it last week.
Anyway, it’s only 10 bucks for Chamber members and 15 for non-members. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Harry Bartlett tells us the Rotary Club’s Superbowl raffle is sold out, but the ‘Ice Out’ raffle isn’t – in fact it’s just started. Prize money is up this year to $1,000, with $750 going to the person who most accurately predicts the date and time that the Rotary Wheel falls over on the ice out off The Point. Staff here at The Leader likes to gamble on this sort of thing and are hoping to improve on last year’s Ice Out guess, which wasn’t less than three weeks off the mark. Harry’s number, if you’re interested in buying, is 805-0482. It was printed incorrectly in last week’s paper, for which we apologize.

Sidewalk clearing, says a senior lady who has to walk a lot, is the best this year since she’s lived in Slave Lake. Such things make a big difference to people who have to walk to get where they’re going. So it’s good to hear that the Town of Slave Lake, and whoever else might be involved in keeping sidewalks clear, is doing a better job than they did before – at least in the part of town (between the seniors’ residence and downtown) that this lady traverses.
So keep up the good work, you sidewalk cleaners!
