Slave Lake, Alberta

Winterhawks end schedule with a win over Fox Creek

The Slave Lake Winterhawks go into the playoffs on a winning note, after closing out their regular season with a 10 – 3 victory in Fox Creek. That might not be saying much, but a win is a win, and fans will remember that the lowly Bandits took one from the ‘Hawks last year when Slave Lake showed up short of players and perhaps short of a willingness to do what it took to win as well.
This time they had only 11 skaters, but the willingness factor was there. After falling behind 2 – 1 in the first period, they scored six times in the second to take complete control of the game. Brent Hill was a one-man wrecking crew, ripping up the Bandit defence for three goals and four assists altogether – six of those points coming in the second period.
Scott Sinclair, with his second, Derri Deschover (up from the Wolves) and Al Beaulac rounded out the second period scoring. Slave Lake led 7 – 3 after two.
Picking up where they left off, the ‘Hawks continued to pound Fox Creek goalie Ian Chwok (63 shots altogether) in the third, scoring three more times. Darryl Garon got the first and Scott Sinclair scored the last two to give him four for the night to go along with one assist.
Also in on the scoring with assists were Adam Ching, Keith Sinclair and Dane Boisvert. Sheldon Ghostkeeper faced 29 shots for the win.
Michael Zinyk didn’t get on the scoresheet, but he made his presence felt with six minor penalties and was ejected, for unspecified reasons, late in the third period.
The playoff picture is not quite clear yet, although with a third-place finish the Winterhawks will certainly meet a team higher than them in the standings in the first round – possibly the defending champion Lamont Bruins.
Legal leads the north division and Onoway leads the south.
