The North Central Hockey League isn’t wasting any time getting its playoffs under-way. The action kicked off Feb. 1, and by the time the Slave Lake Winterhawks hit the ice Saturday - one week after their final regular season game -they were already up one game to none on the Legal Vipers.
The win in Game #1 happened on the road. Slave Lake beat the Vipers 7 -3 with what must have been more than their usual road line-up.
Coach Craig Dombrosky says Brent Hill scored three times in the first 17 minutes of the game, and having Scott Sinclair in the line-up didn’t hurt
either.
“He dominated,” says Dombrosky.
Saturday night they had a full squad too, and it was more than Legal could handle.
The final score was 9 - 5 for the Winterhawks. Game sheets were unavailable by press time but it’s safe to say that Ryan Dierker and Brent Blachford each
got on the board. Dierker struck first, giving his team the lead they never relinquished. It was a 45-foot slapshot that clanked in off iron. Not many people saw it, especially the Legal goalie.
Blachford scored later on a similarly laser-like slapper. Blachford ended up with six points on the night. Wily veteran Kyle Hansen had a great game too, scor-ing a hat trick.
Up next for the ‘Hawks is probably Lamont, the team that knocked them out last year.
