The Atom ‘A’ Thunder had “quite an adventure” on a playoff trip to Whitecourt on Feb. 17, according to their publicity person. It involved a game and a bus trip.
First the game.
The Thunder had a one-goal lead going into the second game of a total-goal series. They prevailed 12 - 8 and move on to the next round, probably against Westlock.
Whitecourt scored first, but the Thunder kept pace. It was 3 - 3 after one period on goals by Erik Labrie, Conor Keaveny and Conner Lukan.
Erik Prokopow led off the scoring in the second period, followed by a trio of goals by Lukan, one by Bradley Girard and another by Keaveny. Slave Lake was up 9 - 5.
In the third, Whitecourt struck back with two quick ones to make it 9 - 7, But Lukan replied with his fifth, followed by a goal by Bradley Girard. Lukan finished it off with 38 seconds left.
Daniel Masur had two assists. Lukan, Keaveny, Labrie and Girard also assisted.
Cody McIntyre was the winning goalie.
Next up was a trip to the hospital with an injured player. Once he was released, the team headed for home, only to find the bus filling with smoke! This was not very good news, but no harm was done, as the bus driver found and fixed the problem. Meanwhile, reports our correspondent, the boys used the unexpected break to get into a good-natured snowball fight.
