Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

Here’s a piece submitted by Roland Michener School:
In this “Acts of Kindness” week, it is time again to think of others that are less fortunate than we are.
Practically everyone who eats lunch at Roland Michener cafeteria knows Mrs. A, the cook who makes the best cheese buns in town. Mr. Adamkewicz is currently having tests and medical attention in Edmonton. During this time, Mrs. A is also staying in Edmonton and cannot be at her job.
We are having a coffee house and silent auction to raise funds to help them out on March 1, 2008. If you could help us by donating something for our silent auction, we would appreciate the help. We will be returning in a few days to check and see if you have anything to donate.
We would also like to invite you to the coffee house. It will be at the Drop-In Centre at 7 p.m. We will be having live performances, gourmet coffee and tea along with our silent auction. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Another ooops! Last week’s good neighbours, Cindy and Len LeBlanc, actually received more than the usual $25 gift certificate for their nomination. Their nominee had added $50 to the pot back in December when he nominated them. This was duly delivered, but mention of the extra $50 never made it into the paper. Sorry about that, and no harm done, we hope.

Be careful out there. Just because it’s warmed up a bit doesn’t mean the roads are safer. Possibly the opposite, with the chance of rain in the forecast (when this was written, at least). Habby Sharkawi, the NDP candidate in the provincial election, stopped in to see us on her way from High Prairie to Edmonton on Feb. 11. She was late, why? Because she hit the ditch somewhere between High Prairie and Slave Lake, and she was far from the only one, she said.
So be careful out there! Slow down. Take it easy. Stay between the lines.

Readers may be wondering why there’s no report in this week’s paper on all the police activity that went on around a certain motel in town last week. The reason is that the RCMP have not released anything official about what happened. Off the record sources indicate it was a death, which is tragic under any circumstances and some more than others. In some such cases, police choose not to make any official announcement and this may be one of those.
Our condolences to the family.

On a lighter note, don’t forget that this is Library Lovers’ Month at the Slave Lake library. You can show how much you love the library by purchasing a card for a loonie, either at the library, or from library supporters set up at certain strategic locations around town on weekends. Then again, you can plan to attend the Night of Chocolate Bliss at the library on Friday, Feb. 29 at 7:00 p.m., to sample the goodies the ‘Friends of the Library’ have whipped up.

And, finally....
Those that forget the pasta are doomed to reheat it.
A clean desk is the sign of a cluttered drawer.
