Winterhawks push Lamont to fifth game

On the verge of elimination from the North Central Hockey League playoffs’ Slave Lake’s Senior Men’s team dug in, hung on and came back to win Sunday. After losing Game 3 on Saturday, they had to win Sunday and did it in dramatic fashion, 8 – 7 in double overtime.
The scene shifts back to Lamont now, on Mar. 1.
Both games were very hard fought – and except for one bad period for the ‘Hawks – very close. The bad period was the second in Saturday’s game. Up 1 – 0 after one period on a Matt Sorochan goal, luck turned harshly against the ‘Hawks as Lamont scored five straight.
That shook up the home team a bit. They responded and got as close as 6 – 5 in the third period, but ended up losing 7 – 5.
The second period of Sunday’s game wasn’t so hot either. The ‘Hawks had already come back from a 2 – 0 first-period deficit to lead 4- 2, but then gave up three straight to trail. They were down 7 – 5 late in the third and mounting furious pressure, but could not seem to solve the Lamont defense. Finally, a shot from the point deflected in, and gave the team a bit of hope with a couple of minutes left.
That last couple of minutes was some of the most intense effort seen all year by Winterhawk fans. With about 30 seconds left, it finally paid off when Brent Blachford broke down the left wing, deked the defenceman to get into a shooting position and snapped one in high off the far post. Lamont almost got it back at the other end in the dying seconds, but ‘Hawks’ goalie Sheldon Ghostkeeper shut the door.
It was Blachford again in the second overtime period to give Slave Lake the win.
