Tied 5 – 5 with Morinville after one game, it was do or die for the Slave Lake Bantam ‘AA’ Thunder. So they did what they had to do, beating Morinville 5 – 2 in their own barn to move on in the Sturgeon Pembina League playoffs.
The second period was the clincher for the Thunder. Leading 1 – 0 after one period on a Riley Eben goal, they went up 4 – 1 and the home team had no answer.
Brandon Devos, Kyle Buchberger and Joey Bigstone scored in the second. Devos also got one in the third to round out the Slave Lake scoring. Zach Pollard stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced in the Slave Lake goal.
Picking up assists in the big win were Kolby Lukan, Aaron Deas, Kirk Ruecker, Devos, Tyler Rossing and Matthew Girard.
The Thunder now face Barrhead in the final. Barrhead beat Whitecourt 9 – 3 in their semi-final series.
