Our crack staff of reporters was somewhat reduced in the past couple of weeks, thanks to illness, which is only worth mentioning because we were unable to cover some events because of it. It was particularly tough on the weekend of March 1, because not only was Patrick Keller the only one on duty, he was tied up all weekend at the alternative energy trade fair at the college, where he had his own table. In spite of that, he was able to pop out to the curling and hockey rinks, so we weren’t left with blank spaces on the sports pages. Well done, Patrick.

Too bad about the Winterhawks losing out to Lamont in the playoffs. It looked like they had a good chance of moving on after winning two of the first four games in the series, but Lamont is a tough team, and especially at home. Well done to the ‘Hawks, who pulled it together nicely at the end of an up and down season.

Speaking of sports, we’re approaching the time of year when there’s a lull in local sports, so much so that sometimes it’s hard to fill even one page of the paper with sports. So….what we’re saying is, if there’s anything remotely sport-ish going on in or around town, let us know about it!

Sales are “extremely swift” on the Rotary’s 777 reverse car raffle, a little birdie tells us. This is the May 31 event at the arena that includes dinner, dance and lots of other prizes. What makes it different from other raffles is that the last ticket drawn wins, instead of the first.

Guess who’s in the news again? Bessie Roffey of Kinuso, who turned 111 recently, is not only on the front page of last week’s High Prairie South Peace News (she nows lives in High Prairie), but was in a Mar. 2 story in the Edmonton Journal. As Alberta’s oldest person, she should be getting the attention!
We didn’t see the Journal article, but a letter about it appeared in the Mar. 6 Journal. The writer emphasizes the fact that U.K. birth records are easily available online (evidently as opposed to Alberta, or Canada?).
The Journal says her maiden name was Bessie Marion Cazaly; the South Peace News has it as Bessie Maria Zazales. We thought it was Cazalet. Whatever it is, good for Bessie for hanging in there into her 12th decade.
