An accident occuring 10 km north of Slave Lake proved fatal for the lone occupant of a 2001 Jeep TJ.
At 8:53 am on March 13, police responded to a two vehicle accident on highway 88.
Investigators believe that the northbound Jeep left its designated lane of travel, sliding into the path of an oncoming southbound tanker truck. The 2007 Western Star tanker was carrying a full load of crude oil when it tried, but failed, to avoid colliding with the oncoming Jeep, resulting in the fatal collision.
Police say that the roadway was icy and alcohol was not a factor.
Emergency medical crews advised the police that the 24 year old driver, Sara Scobie had tremendous injuries and was deceased on scene. The driver of the semi reported no injuries.
The initial investigation closed the highway for nearly seven hours.
The young woman who lost her life in the fatal accident on March 13 will not soon be forgotten.
Sara Scobie had recently graced the pages of The Leader in a January New Faces story.
As one of the more public faces at the Boreal Centre For Bird Conservation, Sara was always ready to help. She loved to chat about the building that she worked in and the important work that was being done there.
At 24, she had been at the BCBC for several months, starting as an assistant bird bander before becoming an executive assistant to the director. She completed an animal biology degree from the University of Alberta in 2006.
Among many other things, Sara looked forward to becoming a licensed bird bander, to work alongside of her peers at the centre where she was also learning payroll and bookkeeping.
