Re-looking at recycling relocation

Slave Lake’s recycling depot may not end up out by the airport after all. Town council is having second thoughts about it, some of which were expressed at a March 18 town council meeting.
Reporting on the temporary relocation of the recycling depot to the back parking lot at the arena, Slave Lake’s town manager Betty Osmond said there’d been a “fairly positive response,” to it so far. Some people were concerned about dealing with pools of meltwater, but other than that people seem happy with it. Councillor Valerie Tradewell said she’d even heard from somebody who preferred it to the old location.
Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee told her colleagues she has been re-thinking council’s intention to permanently relocate the recycle depot to a spot near the town maintenance yard on 7th St. N.E.
“I’m questioning whether the proposed location is the best,” she said, noting that with the town growing to the south, perhaps council should be looking at another site.
Councillor Rob Chalmers agreed, saying he doesn’t like the northeast location. Increasing the inconvenience is not the way to encourage recycling he said, describing himself as an advocate of recycling.
“I would definitely support other options on the south side of town.”
Tradewell noted that council already went through a process of considering various alternatives for the reycling depot. She suggested that list be brought back and perhaps added to.
Council passed a motion to open up the matter and have administration investigate alternative locations.
In the meantime, following a suggestion by councillor Laura Vanderwell Ross, council will send a letter to the Sawridge, thanking that organization for providing a home for the recycling depot for the past few yea
