Seniors' housing open house seeks public comment

The number of housing units for Slave Lake seniors is about to take a quantum leap.
With the architect chosen and a rough draft of the first phase of construction completed, a March 28 public meeting is set to take place at the Pioneer Drop-In Centre, at 12:30 p.m.
The Leader spoke with Valerie Tradewell, board chair of the Slave Lake Regional Housing Authority, about the progress to date and what can be expected at the Friday meeting.
“The architect will show a PowerPoint presentation of the plans for the three different phases, and they will be mapping out the room layouts in tape on the floor, so that you can get a visual of the space of each suite,” says Tradewell.
She suggests that the meeting is just as much about public feedback as it is to show what’s been accomplished so far, and would like anyone interested to show up and put in their two cents.
“We want to find out what people want out of the project: Do we need more common space, are the suites big enough, that kind of thing.”
So far, the plan includes 25 full apartment units, and 20 bachelor suites. A bachelor suite may have an open floor plan with no defined bedroom, and just a small kitchenette.
That’s just Phase 1. Phase 2 will include “Lifelong Leases”, which Tradewell defines as a purchase plan allowing folks to buy into the building and maintain ownership. When they want to move from the suite, the housing board can purchase it back for resale.
It’s an idea that’s gaining popularity in seniors’ housing planning.
Phase 3 of the plan is Assisted Living. Tradewell indicates that the model for seniors housing has changed over the years. The current way of thinking calls for tenants to remain in or near the initial complex. The stress of moving house several times is something most folks would prefer to not have to do.
So, the goal would be for tenants to start in the suites, with lifelong leasing, and then move into assisted living if the need arises. From there, tenants can move into move into the extended care facilities, all without the headaches typically associated with moving your home.
So far, Phase 1 is getting most of the attention, with the other phases to be mapped out in in the future. March 28 is your chance to vote for a hot tub or world-class golf course.
If you want your voice to be heard or get up to speed on what’s what, be sure to attend the meeting at the Pioneer Drop-In Centre at 12:30.
