George and Kathy Wright dropped in the office the other day to chat about what they’re doing to promote tourism to the region. Apparently it’s quite a challenge, at least financially, because the Big Lake Country Tourism budget is pretty skinny. But there are good things happening nevertheless, and we’ll report on some of those in an article soon.
Of course it doesn’t hurt to have a big, beautiful lake right in the middle of the area they’re trying to promote.
Drop over to the visitor information centre sometime and say hello to George and Kathy. But not until the trade show is over! They’re too busy organizing that right now.

Folks, what you ought to be doing this weekend is going to the Memeza Africa show at the Sawridge on Friday night. It’s one of those African choirs that can really raise the rafters.
The show is one of a series of fundraisers for international causes that the Slave Lake Adult Education Committee has put on in recent years. Organizer Karina Pillay-Kinnee says $35 of the $50 ticket price goes to the Stephen Lewis Foundation - which has built quite a reputation in the field of helping people hit by the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
Find out more about the work of the foundation at stephenlewisfoundation.org, and about Memeza Africa at memezaafrica.com. See more details on Page 40.

Here’s a letter that was submitted last Thursday, when this was the only space still available:
Hi there, my name is Angele St.Louis-Cardinal. I was born and raised in Slave Lake along with my husband Rodney. Both of us run our own businesses in the community.
I am a registered massage therapist. My husband is an electrical contractor.
Just last summer we had our first child Janelle. She is a great little girl. I count my blessings everyday that she is happy and healthy. Unfortunately her older cousin, Carter Laframboise, is having a harder start on life.
Carter has Cystic Fibrosis; he was diagnosed at the age of one-and-a-half. This is why this letter is sent to you. We need your help in finding a cure. You can help by sponsoring me in the “Great Strides” walk which takes place in Edmonton on May 25th 2008.
All donations over $20 will get a tax creditable receipt. For a bonus, I will also give a free one-hour massage to the person and company who donate the most money to Great Strides. Hopefully that will up the ante a bit.
There are many ways to donate; number one, you can go online to www.cysticfibrosis.ca/greatstrides and go down to ‘sponsor a walker’, and then enter my name. Just follow the prompts.
Number two, you can make a cheque or money order made payable to Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Any donation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call me at 849-2502. My address is 305 8th Street SE Slave Lake , AB T0G 2A3 Thank you for your time.
