The Slave Lake Novice Blue Thunder capped off a fine season at the KC Knights tournament in Edmonton Apr. 4 – 6. They went 3 – 1, winning the ‘B’ championship in convincing fashion with a 9 – 1 whupping of a Grande Prairie team.
The first game was an 8 – 2 win over Risley Equipment of Grande Prairie, the same team they’d end up facing in the final. This time it was an 8 – 2 victory for the Slave Lake boys. Tyler Emes and Tristan Cardinal accounted for three quarters of the goals with three apiece. Daniel Noskey and Corbyn Cardinal got the others. Goalie Steven Cardinal was named player of the game.
Game #2 was against the KC Thunder, winners of the Tier #3 championship in Edmonton this year.
“It was filled with exciting end-to-end action,” says coach Dean Emes in a write-up, “with strong defensive play and goaltending on both sides.”
The final score was 3 – 3, with Tristan Noskey scoring two and Tyler Emes one for the Thunder. Tyler Emes was selected player of the game.
Game #3 was not the best for the Slave Lake boys. They came out flat and found themselves down 3 – 0 after five minutes. They fought back but ended up on the short end of a 7 – 5 score against the Confederation Pirates of Edmonton.
Tristan Noskey again led the way with a four-goal effort and Tyler Emes got the other. Daniel Noskey was named player of the game for his strong defensive play.
In the fourth and final game, the Thunder got back into the groove and walloped Risley Equipment for a second time, 9 – 1.
Lots of players got into the scoring act in this one: Hunter Cuthbert got a pair, Tristan Noskey scored twice as well. Tyler Emes, Daniel Noskey, Jarrett Wedmid, Daelan Der and Corbyn Cardinal all scored once. Tristan Noskey won player of the game honours.
Also getting on the scoresheet with assists were Christian Conlon and Landon Lavallee.
“The boys couldn’t have been happier,” says coach Emes. “They hoisted their trophy and did a victory lap, passing it from one player to the next. It was a great way to end a terrific season.”
And how great was their season? Besides the tournament win in April, they won their league title in February and won a tournament in November as well, going 3 – 0 and out-scoring their competition 37 – 5.
According to information provided by the coach, their overall record for the season, including league and tournaments, was 27 wins, five losses and one tie.
“I just wanted to brag the kids up a little,” says the coach, “as they have all worked real hard this year, done real well and have had lots of fun.”
