The ceremonial spades came out and hardhats were handed around at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new government centre and library in Slave Lake last Wednesday. In front with the shovels are Alberta Infrastructure Minister Jack Hayden, flanked by Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen (left) and Slave Lake Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee. Otherwise, left to right, are library board chair Joe McWilliams, Ken Jardine of the local Employment and Immigration office (and a library board member), town councillor Laura Vanderwell Ross, Randy Ross of Children’s Services, town councillors Rob Chalmers, Elaine Carmichael, Valerie Tradewell and Ed Procyshyn, and provincial court judge William Paul.

Business as usual at the mall
It’s business as usual at the Sawridge Plaza, at least for now.
Just prior to the groundbreaking ceremony of the new town government centre and library, The Leader visited with business owners at the Sawridge Plaza as they ramp up for a major overhaul.
Don't hold your breath for Shell
Three weeks ago, Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen raised a lot of eyebrows at a Slave Lake Chamber of Commerce meeting. She said that the oil company Shell was planning to invest $20 billion in a heavy oil project north of Wabasca. Not only that, but they expected a community of anywhere from 4,000 to 15,000 people to spring up in the bush.

Anytime a 10th annual event comes around, you know the organizers have been doing something right. That milestone is achieved this weekend, Apr. 26, when the Northern Spirit Tae Kwon Do Club holds its 10th annual tournament at Northern Lakes College.
