Anytime a 10th annual event comes around, you know the organizers have been doing something right. That milestone is achieved this weekend, Apr. 26, when the Northern Spirit Tae Kwon Do Club holds its 10th annual tournament at Northern Lakes College.
The tournament usually attracts about 200 competitors from around Alberta, and occasionally also from clubs in B.C. and Saskatchewan.
Head instructor Bruce Whitney says this tournament will be different in that for the first time the club is giving away some additional prizes.
“We’re going to give away eight bikes to the competitors,” he says. “From little three-year-old bikes with training wheels up to two adult bikes.”
“It’s never been done before,” Whitney adds. “It’s our way of thanking all those guys for supporting us over the years.”
The Slave Lake club has about 150 members, roughly 50 of whom Whitney expects to compete in the tournament.
The action commences around 10 a.m. on Saturday, Apr. 26. Admission is $5.00 per person, unless you’re seven years or younger, in which case you get in free.
