Hockey school back

If you like to put your kids in hockey school, the news is good. Peak Performance Hockey School plans to run two weeks this summer right here in Slave Lake.
Last year Peak ran a school for the first time at the Arctic Ice Centre. Darryl Marcoux, who had just finished four years with the Princeton University Tigers in the States, was the head instructor. He’ll be back again, says school organizer Tyler Warman, bringing several of his college and pro colleagues with him to help out.
Marcoux now plays for the Fresno Falcons in the East Coast Hockey League. Warman says some of his teammates from there, as well as some of his former university mates will help out at the camp, which runs the last two weeks of August.
“We’re looking for 200 students,” Warman says. “We have about 50 registered already.”
Some of the kids will be participating courtesy of KidSport, the organization that helps out with registration fees and equipment. Warman says the hockey school has teamed up with KidSport locally to make that happen.
Last year the school was full at 100, which included kids from High Prairie, Wabasca and Athabasca. Warman says he’s had interest from people as far away as Peace River and Westlock, and urges anyone interested locally to not wait too long to sign their kids up.
Registration forms are available at Boston Pizza and Sports First.
Additional features this year may include an evening or weekend for older girls and women, if the demand is there, Warman says. And, he adds, any leftover ice time is available for rent for “a very fair price.”
