Demolition derby back - if there's enough help

It looks as if demolition derby is coming back to Widewater. Rick Bassett says after being approached by several people, he’s taken on the task of organizing an event for either the first or second Saturday of September.
What Bassett has in mind is a derby of 30 – 50 cars. He’s already able to guarantee a $2,500 first prize, thanks to one local business. He says it could grow, depending on entries and other factors.
What he needs now are volunteers – both individuals and community groups willing to tackle certain aspects as fundraisers for their own causes.
“Without their help,” Bassett says, “I’m not going to do it.”
For example, he needs a group to put on a banquet. Help is also required in looking after getting the site ready, looking after parking, cleaning up and more.
Bassett has already done a fair amount of legwork. He says the Widewater Athletic Association has offered the derby arena free of charge. A survey of the stands and the sound booth show a bit of work needs doing.
“I’m confident we can get the equipment out there to do it,” Bassett says.
Bassett figures half the entry fees would go to charity.
“It has to be a community event, geared for families,” he says. “And it has to be for charity.”
