Criminal goof-up leads police to hot goods

During a routine investigation involving the complaint of a stolen computer, local police happened upon an entire cache of hot property.
On May 21, Slave Lake RCMP responded to a call of a stolen laptop from a residence on 6th Ave. SE, just a stone’s throw from the police station.
It didn’t take police long to determine that the computer had already been reported stolen earlier in March, during a spate of vehicle break-ins in the same area. All of a sudden, the victim began to look a lot like a suspect.
Cops put the squeeze on the suspect, who led them to an apartment containing more stolen merchandise, including “miscellaneous electronics, a barbeque, CD’s, various wallets and stolen identification and a large amount of drug paraphernalia.”
The following night, May 22, Slave Lake RCMP executed a search warrant on the residence. Three adult males and two adult females were arrested and thousands of dollars of stolen property was recovered. Two men and one of the women are now facing at least one charge of possession of property obtained by crime, under $5000. More charges are pending upon further investigation.
Slave Lake General Investigative Services also assisted in the investigation, where a search warrant was obtained and executed on the residence.
Of the property that has been identified, police found that most items were stolen from unlocked vehicles in the southeast of town. A barbeque and lawn chairs had been stolen from the balconies of local apartment buildings.
Police are asking that any potential victims of un-reported theft in recent months attend the Slave Lake RCMP detachment so that police may help in the recovery of their property. Citizens are reminded to keep their vehicles locked at all times and valuables out of plain sight.
