The Leader was all primed to meet renowned American bird writer Sam Fried last week. He was due to attend the songbird festival and spend even more time touring the area and viewing its birds. George Wright of Big Lake Country Tourism was to be his guide and George had invited a reporter along on one of the days. But as it turned out, Mr. Fried fell ill and canceled his trip. Too bad, but he’ll be back, says George, either in the fall or next spring.

Maybe enough has been said about the 777 car raffle, but perhaps the reader can indulge a bit more. That panty-throwing incident, for example, was a totally contrived event. We even know the identity of the chief conspirator, but of course wouldn’t dream of embarrassing her in print.
On another note, it was nice to see so many ex-Slave Lakers back in town for the event. It had the spirit of a reunion about it – a comment we heard from more than one person. It also had the spirit of a darned good party, judging by how little persuasion it took to get people up and dancing. Congratulations to those rockers Peter and Margaret Moore for being the first on the dance floor!

Thanks to that last entry, The Leader wins the Media Challenge over Cable TV, The gang at The Fox and we’re not sure who else. That pizza from Alimo’s sure is going to taste good. Better luck next time, fellas.

We received a copy of the latest Our Canada magazine in the mail the other day. This is a glossy mag made up largely of volunteer contributions from its readers across the country. Along with it was a letter from the editor, letting us know that “a member of your community is a featured contributor. This person’s name is Cara Locke, someone we’ve never heard of, not that that is significant. It took some searching through the magazine, but we finally found Cara’s contribution, a photo of a dragonfly. And not just any dragonfly, one with a smile on its face! Well done, Cara!
If you’re curious about the pic and would like to see it, the library in Slave Lake has a copy of the magazine in question.

It’s interesting to see the controversy over the possible scrapping by CBC of the Hockey Night in Canada theme. Locked in a lawsuit with the composer, CBC hasn’t been able to settle, so we might have different music next season. It raises other questions: Will Harry Bartlett still be able to use it as his ring tone?
