Twenty charged in cocaine bust

Slave Lake RCMP wrapped up a six-month long drug investigation last week, and the results are impressive. Twenty people face charges of trafficking, according to a June 20 news release.
Here’s the gist:
“On June 16, 2008, members of the Slave Lake RCMP detachment General Investigation Section concluded a six-month investigation which targeted the importation and distribution of controlled substances (specifically cocaine) into Slave Lake. Twenty Slave Lake residents have either been arrested or are wanted in relation to the 28 charges.... including trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a controlled substance.”
The release goes on to say that police seized 15 ounces of cocaine, cocaine hydrochloride (powder cocaine) and ‘freebase’ cocaine (commonly called ‘crack’ cocaine). They estimated the ‘street value’ of the seized drugs to be “in excess of $25,000.” Also seized in the bust were $20,000 in Canadian currency.
Police did not release the names of any of the accused; nor were any court dates mentioned.
The investigation was a joint effort.
“The Slave Lake General Investigation Section received assistance from several surrounding detachments,” says Sgt. Peter Quilty in the release, “and a number of specialized units from the RCMP K-Division headquarters in Edmonton.”
Staff Sgt. Willie Wittig says there will be more news coming up on the case soon.
“That unit is actively pursuing other leads,” he says. “We’re planning on doing more work that way.”
The General Investigation Section is a ‘plainclothes’ unit, which became active last year.
“Everybody’s been asking about it,” Wittig says. “But there are certain things we can’t say.”
