Jonathan Yellowknee is as excited as can be to look out over the Slave Lake Airport from the cockpit of a water bomber ‘duck’. Mrs. Jean Montgomery’s Grade 1 class from C.J. Schurter School took a tour of the Slave Lake Air Tanker Base on June 23. The trip was organized after the class sent a thank you letter and drawings to SRD’s Helitack firefighting crew for putting out the May 15 Wagner fire.

The dream of a safe home is a dream come true
Victims of abuse in Slave Lake and the surrounding area may finally have the support they deserve. It’s been a long time in the making, but Northern Haven Support Society’s dream of a safe house for women and children who suffer from domestic violence is finally becoming reality.
M.D. council decides against tax break for forest products companies
After tossing the notion around for a few weeks, M.D. councillors finally gave a thumbs down to a tax break to the hard-hit forest products companies within their boundaries.
Council gives southeast tot lots another year
After successful fundraising by the Save Our Parks Committee, the Town of Slave Lake has backed away from plans to sell off Maple Tot Lot and Kinette Fun Time Park in the southeast corner of the town.

Kevin Rye of the Phoenix Firebirds is out at third in a slowpitch game against Whitecap Motors on June 23. That’s Whitecap third baseman Richard Ebi with the ball in his glove. Whitecap won the game by a 15 – 10 score.

49th Widewater Sports had two good days, one bad
A good time was had by all at the 49th annual Widewater Sports ball tournament weekend, until Sunday. That’s when lightning and heavy rain forced an early end to the event.
St. Mary's Hustlers take hom the corporate challenge trophy again
Don’t ask the 2008 Community Corporate Challenge winning team what what the term ‘grace in defeat’ means. They wouldn’t know.
In fact, a week after beating out 12 teams to take home the trophy, St. Mary of the Lake’s Hustlers were still so pumped by their victory that they called us over to listen to them gloat. And gloat they did!
