We are pleased to introduce readers to the newest addition to The Leader family, summer student Sharla Simpson.
Sharla is an RMSS student who is entering Grade 10 after the holidays.
She will be filling the shoes of Jewel Purves for the next couple months doing ad layout and general office duty.
We thought we’d put her on the spot for an interview and mugshot during her first day at the office.
“I saw the ad and thought it would be really cool,” said Simpson, when asked how she came into the job. It’s still too early to tell, but we asked whether she was considering a future career in the news business, to which she replied cautiously, “Maybe.”
By our way of thinking, any young person willing to give up their summer holiday to work in a dark, quiet office deserves credit. Welcome!

Local author Jennifer Cowan has hit a speed bump in the release of her first book. ‘london means something.’
Cowan was all set to begin distribution of the sci-fi thriller with a book signing kick-off at the local library. However, the July 12 event has been postponed, evidently due to a holdup at U.S. Customs.
“It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen,” said Cowan. Still, she assures us the holdup will be brief, and sci-fi afficionados will get their fix probably within a couple of weeks. Stay tuned for the new signing party date.

In case you still need a literary fix, author Rod MacKay will be appearing at the Slave Lake Public Library on July 16. That date is confirmed and he is already toting his stock of books around. For a sneak preview (and review) of his book “Addicted to Life” see page 10.

Despite rumours to the contrary, our toy-loving ad lady Kathie Millett did not crash her motorbike. Concerned callers who thought they spotted her ‘wrecked’ bike will be happy to know that it was only in transit, on route to a custom paint job. Still, its remarkable how fast news of any sort travels around town.
