The Slave Lake Air/Ground Ambulance service’s Jail and Bail fundraiser on July 4 proved wildly successful, raising $17,760.63. The proceeds will be divided between the Northern Have Support Society and Slave Lake Victims Services.
Local police were kept busy throughout the day, recording 60 arrests as locals, celebrities, dignitaries and even politicians were caught in their dragnet.
A rigged judge and jury set the bail and the detainees were given as many phone calls as needed as they frantically called friends on the outside to help spring them.
Perhaps not surprisingly, KARE and Rotary club member Harry Bartlett raised the most money.
Yes, even while doing hard time, the fundraising dynamo managed to round up a cool $545 before receiving the classic “cake with a file baked inside.”
Allan McDonald must have friends in high places. He spent the shortest time in the clink at five minutes before raising $73. It happened to be Allan’s birthday which might explain how he managed to raise triple his bail money. Congratulations and happy birthday Allan!
The longest stretch in the tank was endured by The Fox radio personality “Double J”.
He languished for nearly two hours in the cold, hard reality of the cellblocks at Rennie Hall Plaza: proof that you shouldn’t do the crime, if can’t do the (air) time.
The runner-up for longest time served on an outstanding warrant goes to Taylor Kelham.
He was back on the streets in one hour and 34 minutes, fully rehabilitated and ready to walk the straight and narrow.
Who says that crime doesn’t pay?
