Slave Lake, Alberta

The Page

More good news of the recent Slave Lake Air/Ground Ambulance Service’s Jail and Bail Fundraiser comes courtesy of Deanna Wiggett. The batteries on their calculator died before crunching the final numbers, so they broke out the abacus and came up with some new figures. Apparently, convict Christine Kobryzynski’s bail was set at a formidable $500. Her crack legal team managed to come up with $1,100 and she was back on the street the same day. That brings the total monies raised to $18,369.84, all to be added to the coffers of Victims Services and the Northern Haven Support Society. Great news!

By now, most folks have tired of the Telus announcement reminding callers to first dial ‘780’ before placing even a local call. We quickly learned to prefer dialing the area code to listening to the saccharine sweet robot operator’s patronizing message. Whoever came up with the idea of making the message just slightly longer and more annoying than actually dialing the extra three digits deserves an award. It is the most effective method for breaking people of a habit that we have come across.

Riverboat Daze has come and gone, but will not soon be forgotten. Local groups and businesses put so much together over the weekend that our few reporters were hard pressed to cover every event! As a result, we have been on the receiving end of some flack for not attending an event or two. For that we apologize. Please dont take it personally, we were there in spirit!

A newsboy was standing on the corner with a stack of papers, yelling, “Read all about it. Fifty people swindled! Fifty people swindled!”
Curious, a man walked over, bought a paper, and checked the front page. Finding nothing, the man said, “There’s nothing in here about fifty people being swindled.”
The newsboy ignored him and went on, calling out, “Read all about it. Fifty-one people swindled!”
