Local woman completes Sylvan Lake Half Ironman race

A local woman recently completed the 5th Annual Sylvan Lake Half Ironman.
Gail Ungstad of Slave Lake completed the triathlon on Saturday, July 26. She placed 263rd out of 273 who completed the race.
She completed her swim portion in 253rd place with a time of 55 minutes and 47 seconds, her bike portion in 266th place with a time of four hours, three minutes and 32 seconds and her run portion of the race in 258th place in three hours, four minutes and 23 seconds, for a total race time of eight hours, three minutes and 39.6 seconds.
This half-sized Ironman triathlon challenged competitors to complete a 1.9-kilometre swim in the lake, a 90-km bike course and a 21.1 km run. They were only given a total of eight hours and 20 minutes to complete all three portions.
Competitors came to race in Sylvan Lake from as far away as Edmonton, Calgary, Penticton, Regina and Montana.
Angela Naeth of Prince George, British Columbia was the women’s winner with a time of four hours, 37 minutes and 12.1 seconds. Runner up Catherine Brown of Calgary was 10 minutes back.
Kyle Marcotte of Calgary was the first man to cross the finish line with a time of four hours, 15 minutes and one second. Second among male competitors was Chris Brown of Penticton in a time of 4:18:51.
