The game was part of the Rotary Club’s sports celebrity dinner, at which eight people bid on and won a chance to play golf on the morning of Aug. 7 with Upshall and Vern Fiddler of the Nashville Predators. In the back, Brian Bouchard of Fiddler’s team tries and apparently succeeds in distracting Chris Hatch. Nobody made the putt.

Council hears plea on safety for pedestrians
Pedestrian safety needs a higher priority in Slave Lake, town councillors heard at their Aug. 5 meeting. Edith Mackenzie told council that the safety of people who walk has not been given the importance it deserves.

Tolko Industries’ new engineered wood products mill is producing some impressive stuff. But it’s only doing it about half the time, as it follows a schedule of seven days on and seven off for the time being.

Vernon Fiddler, left, of the NHL’s Nashville Predators, and his friend Scottie Upshall of the Philadelphia Flyers show off the live auction item Fiddler got from country musicians Brooks & Dunn at the Slave Lake Rotary Club’s sports celebrity dinner and auction on Aug. 6 at Northern Lakes College. Fiddler himself won the bidding on the autographed Epiphone acoustic, at $1,900. Several other items went for healthy amounts on the night, earning thousands for the Rotary Club’s new library fund. Around 250 people turned up for the event.

Walker wins double gold at Masters nationals
Ron Walker, the Slave Laker and member of the Sucker Creek First Nation now living in Edmonton, has won two gold medals and one silver at the Canadian Masters Championships on the August long weekend. Walker reversed his performance at the provincials, taking gold in discus and shot put for his age group and silver in the javelin.
Mitsue Minnows continue strong season
The two Slave Lake swimmers in the Mitsue Minnows club had a buy month of July, competing in four weekend meets in preparation for the regional meet on the August long weekend.
