Car crash stunt, bus service added to demolition derby

The Widewater Demolition Derby is coming right up, and the two Ricks, organizers of the Sept. 6 crash fest were in The Leader last week with news of new developments.
First off, there’s a stunt man coming, by the name of Sir Crash-a-Lot.
“He’s going to jump off a ramp into a holiday trailer,” says Rik Bassett. “And hopefully another vehicle will be parked in front of the trailer and he’ll crash into that.”
Rick Nowicki says the stunt will be performed after the demolition derby is over. They were planning to have it during an intermission, but he says it might take too long to clear the wreckage.
Bassett says that a collection will be taken during the Sir Crash-a-Lot stunt to benefit the family of the late James Green of Slave Lake.
This Sir Crash-a-Lot fellow seems a somewhat mysterious figure, at least the way Bassett describes him. He says he only performs when there’s a lot of people and when there’s a good cause.
“We’ve got both,” Bassett says.
Sir Crash-a-Lot actually phoned The Leader last week, calling himself ‘Ryan’. That’s not his real name either, though. He said he needs to keep a low profile, and plans to “get the hell out of Dodge” as soon as he’s done his stunt.
“I promise not to disappoint,” says the man who claims to be on the run from the law south of the border.
“Hopefully it’ll go off with a bang.”
The other news is that the Slave Lake Wolves will be operating a shuttle service with their bus from the Arctic Ice Centre in town to the derby site, at 11:00 a.m., 12 noon, 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. They’ll charge five dollars per trip there and back, Nowicki says, with the proceeds all going towards the Wolves.
“There’s also a shuttle bus from the dance,” Nowicki adds.
The dance will follow the carnage in the pit and will be held right next door at the Southshore Complex in Widewater.
As for entries in the derby, “we were hoping for 30,” Nowicki says, “but I think we’ll get 30 just from town,” with several from out of town assured.
There are three classes: eight-cylinder cars, four cylinder cars and pickup trucks. Oh, and let’s not forget the powder puff event, for the ladies. The destruction begins at 1:00 p.m. sharp, rain, snow or shine.
