No use crying over spilled oil. Demonstrators prepare to lower the channel walls of a barge skimmer into Lesser Slave Lake’s Canyon Creek marina, on Sept. 17. About 100 employees from the Area ‘D’ Oil-Spill Co-Op gathered at the Fall exercise session to learn about new techniques and equipment available to combat spills. The barge skimmer and its landlocked cousin the drum skimmer, were on display as workers focussed on dealing with spills in water.

The slate of candidates for the federal riding of Fort McMurray – Athabasca is rounding into shape. With just three weeks to voting day, there is still time to get to know something about the alternatives to the Conservative Party candidate, the incumbent MP Brian Jean.
Arena renovation options coming before public soon
Citizens interested in the future of the Arctic Ice Centre should keep their eyes peeled for announcements about an open house on the topic. Town council, at its Sept. 16 meeting, chose several reno options for public consideration, and those will presumably be coming to an open house near you sometime soon.

Wolves prepare with three-game weekend
The Slave Lake Wolves had three exhibition games on the weekend. It may have been one too many, as they got thumped 10 - 0 by Peace River on Sunday.
Local talent stiffens competition at Flat Top meet
Nearly 2000 people showed up to watch and/or race at the Flattop motocross track on the weekend of Sept. 14.
The race was the sixth of the 2008 Alberta MX Provincial Series.
