The Rotary cash raffle is about 60 per cent sold, we hear from well-placed contacts within that organization. If it sells out, the Rotary will have achieved its $400,000 fundraising goal for the new library.

A clarification on the story about Nick, the boy with cancer that appeared on the front page of last week’s Lakeside Leader. According to an anonymous caller who said she was calling on behalf of Nick’s mother, Nick has been in treatment since last March, and what he has is leukemia. Another caller let us know that Nick had a stem cell transplant.
A benefit for Nick’s family is being held on Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Elks Hall in Slave Lake, starting at 6:00 p.m.

Our intrepid photographers had a lot of fun taking pictures of the gorgeous fall foliage around Slave Lake last week. Not many of them made it into the paper, and perhaps that’s just as well. For one thing, the quality of the colour and resolution is usually much diminished by the time it gets onto newsprint, which is quite disappointing. For another, pretty leaves aren’t exactly news, although that hasn’t stopped us in the past.
But if you’re interested in seeing what our cameras saw, there should be some of the photos at lakesideleader.com in the photo gallery this week.

We made a rare side excursion to the mall last week, on the way back from purchasing something at Extra Foods. It’s interesting that the mall seems almost busier now than it did before half of it was closed off for construction purposes. Anyway, Andy Assaft at Maga’s Head to Toe tells us he’s pleased with his new location, which is the former Reitman’s spot. It looks good, too.
We hear that the Sawridge has plans for the open area that includes the food court - or what used to be the food court, but nothing is confirmed yet. It would seem to be a good location for a bigger restaurant - or at least more places serving food, to take advantage of the concentration of government workers that will be working next door when it all gets finished.

While we’re on the topic of construction, it looks as if something pretty big is going on west of Grizzly Ridge Honda, but no news yet what sort of business might end up there, big or small. Meanwhile, something’s going on east of the Honda shop too, but we’re still in the dark as to what it might be.
