Slave Lake, Alberta

Road trip not kind to Winterhawks

Joe McWilliams

The Slave Lake Winterhawks’ visit to the mountains on the weekend wasn’t all that much fun, judging by the results. Two games, two losses to teams they probably should have beaten.
On Saturday the ‘Hawks dropped a 7 - 4 decision to the Jasper Wolves. Sunday they fell 5 - 4 to the Hinton Heat.
The first period was a very bad one in Saturday’s game. Jasper took a 4 - 0 lead - two of the goals coming shorthanded. The ‘Hawks did better in the second and third periods, but it wasn’t enough.
Keith Sinclair, Grant Hawkins, Brent Hill and Kyle Hansen scored the goals. Sheldon Ghostkeeper faced 43 shots in net for Slave Lake.
On Sunday it was the second period that sank the Winterhawks. Down just 1 - 0 after one, they gave up four goals in the second to trail 5 - 1 after 40 minutes. They bounced back with three goals in the third, but again it was too little, too late.
Hill scored two of those, with Keith Sinclair and Rob Rinas getting the others.
Newcomer Ryan Bardoel played in net for the Winterhawks.
The ‘Hawks had only a dozen skaters on the trip, which surely didn’t help.
This weekend the Winterhawks host Athabasca on Friday and Onoway on Saturday.
