Vanderwell's cuts one shift; 40 - 45 jobs lost
In the heyday times several years ago, Vanderwell Contractors ran three shifts at its Mitsue lumber mill and employed around 240 people. This week, it’s down to one shift and 80 workers, and with no improvement in market conditions expected any time soon.

Drugs, impaired charges up in first half of 2008
Slave Lake RCMP were a bit busier in the first half of 2008 than they were in the same period of 2007. Drug and impaired driving charges, for example, were both up during that period, according to a report presented to Slave Lake town council on Nov. 4.

Wolves put a scare into league leaders
The Slave Lake Wolves had something pretty good going against the mighty Whitecourt Wolverines on Saturday night. Although the Wolverines were pounding them on the shot clock, the Wolves enjoyed leads of 3 – 1 and 4 – 2 and it seemed almost everything they flung at the net was going in.

Winterhawks beat Edson in a shoot-out
What people were talking about after Saturday’s Winterhawks’ game was why the coach chose the five players he did for the shoot-out. Or rather, why Brent Hill and Scott Sinclair weren’t on the list.
