A good two-way effort by the Slave Lake Winterhawks on Saturday resulted in a 5 -2 victory over the North Divsion-leading Legal Vipers.
“Legal played well,” says coach Kim Scobie. “We simply played better.”
The ‘Hawks pounced on a couple of early chances, with Arron Legault and Brent Blachford scoring to put their team up inside of the four-minute mark. Those goals were important, because the play evened out quickly and Legal came back to tie it.
It wasn’t until the latter part of the second that the ‘Hawks were able to recapture that early groove and put a couple more pucks in the net. One was by Brent Hill, finishing off a nice passing play from Blachford and Legault on the powerplay by ringing a wrist shot off the post from about 20 feet out.
The other goal came when ‘Hawks’ D-man Kiel Ching went for a stroll up the right side and fired a nice cross-ice pass to a streaking Kyle Hansen who tipped it past Legal goalie Chris Gauthier.
Keith Sinclair finished off the scoring with a third-period goal.
The Vipers had their chances, but Sheldon Ghostkeeper was solid in net for the ‘Hawks. So were all his teammates, Scobie says.
“The guys played really well,” he says. “A full squad makes a world of difference.”
On Sunday, the Lamont Bruins failed to show up, forfeiting the two points.
With the two wins, the Winterhawks now stand at nine wins and six losses. They have two road games this weekend, in Athabasca and Lamont.
