Slave Lake’s Pee Wee ‘A’ Thunder had their second helping of higher-level play on the weekend since dropping out of league play. They made it to the final of a tournament in Innisfail, losing in the final to Wetaskiwin.
Coach Les Price says it’s exactly the kind of competition he was hoping for.
“Our goalies are seeing some shots,” he says.
That’s probably putting it mildly, but the Thunder were firing plenty at the other goalies too in the tournament. In the round robin portion they beat Canmore 8 - 6 and host Innisfail 8 - 3 before losing to Wetaskiwin 9 - 7.
Ian Pollard was in net for the first game and Jiles Ladouceur got the nod in the second.
The final round robin game was against Wetaskwin. Slave Lake lost 9 - 7, despite out-shooting their opponent 41 - 26. Tyler Campbell and Beau Price each scored a pair of goals. Other goal scorers were Thomas Foster, Damien Rhoades and Braiden Stasow. Ian Pollard was in net.
The 2 - 1 record put the Thunder into a semi-final game against Northwest Edmonton, a team Price figured was the best of the bunch.
“A very good team,” he says. “We got outshot and we got the win.”
The score was 6 - 3, with Ladouceur getting the win in net. Thomas Foster, Austin Kuhn, Damien Rhoades and Braiden Stasow scored the goals.
That set up Sunday’s final against Wetaskiwin. Wetaskiwin jumped out to a 3 - 0 first period lead and ended up winning 9 - 4. Tyler Campbell, Beau Price, Jordan Tonsi and Foster scored for Slave Lake. Pollard started in net and Ladouceur finished the game.
Price says another ‘AA’ tournament in Drayton Valley in early January is next on the agenda, followed by yet another tournament in late January. Price says he’s trying for an exhibition game this weekend.
