Woman dies in crash with tanker truck

Bad road conditions were a contributing factor in a crash that killed a Widewater woman last week, police say.
The collision happened about 17 kilometres west of Slave Lake on Hwy. 2, near Turner Rd. A large eastbound transport truck pulling a couple of tank trailers collided with a private vehicle heading west. Police say that the smaller vehicle had lost control and crossed into the path of the oncoming transport truck.
“The vehicles collided and came to rest in the north ditch,” says a release from Sgt. R.W. Dodds of the Slave Lake RCMP. “The tractor was engulfed in flames but a quick response from by Slave Lake and Widewater firefighters allowed the blaze to be contained.”
The fire did quite a lot of damage to the cab of the truck and even burned a hole in the nearest tank it was towing. It did not seem to have ignited whatever was inside the tank. The driver of the truck was not injured.
The 55-year-old driver of the other vehicle was not so lucky. Police say she died at the scene. They had not released her name as of press time.
