In memory of a loving, caring, generous and extraordinary sister, teacher and dear friend to all the people who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Sister Mary was born in Bashaw, Alberta on April 26, 1926 to Rose and Michael Felt, one of ten children. She attended school in Manifred, Castor and Red Deer, all in Alberta. Mary entered the Noviciate of the "Daughters of Wisdom" July 26, 1945. She took her first vows February 2, 1947 taking the name of Sr. Mary of the Immaculate Heart. Her first teaching assignment was a position at the St. Joseph's Convent in Red Deer for twelve years. Later she moved to Slave Lake, Alberta were she taught school for twenty-one years. In 1977 she joined the "Sisters for Christian Community" where she continued to teach and serve the people of Slave Lake and the surrounding community. Sister Mary retired in 1981 and devoted her life to volunteer work with seniors and for the community of Slave Lake.
Her hobbies included fishing, cross-country skiing, swimming and cribbage and more cribbage. She enjoyed traveling and one of the many highlights was her visit with Mother Teresa is Calcutta, India. Many referred to her as the "Flying Nun."
Mary is survived by two loving sisters Thersa (Lyle) Ayrey and Doris (Bill) Buelow; four brothers Donald (Violet) Felt, James (Edna) Felt, Gordon (Alice) Felt and Clifford (Gail) Felt; sister-in-law Mary Felt; brother-in-law Lloyd Froehler; and numerous nieces, nephews and many cherished friends. She was predeceased by her sister Victoria, brother Joseph, and brother John and his wife Eva Felt.
Mary passed away peacefully June 12, 2005 in the Slave Lake Hospital with family, friends, and her priest at her bedside.
Prayer Services were held in Slave Lake on Tuesday, June 14 at 7:00 p.m. from the St. Peter Celestin Roman Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Slave Lake on Wednesday, June 15 at 1:00 p.m. from the Gathering Place with Father Garry LaBoucane OMI and Father Maurice Joly OMI as Celebrants. Prayer Services in Bashaw were held on Thursday, June 16, at 7:00 p.m. from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Bashaw on Friday, June 17 at 2:00 p.m. from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church with Father Garry LaBoucane OMI and Father Maurice Joly OMI as Celebrants. Interment followed in the Bashow Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted to the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Religious Congregation.
