10,000 kilometres from home

As reported in last week’s Lakeside Leader Filipino film actor and musician Aljur Abrenica, left, is doing a concert at Slave Lake’s Legacy Centre on Sept. 2. He’s doing dates in Canada this summer with comedian Kuya Jobert, in a show billed as ‘The Heartthrob (Abrenica) and the Heartbreaker (Jobert).’ Accompanying Abrenica on his tour is his girlfriend, fellow actor A.J. Raval, right. The pair are currently appearing in the Tagalog language film Sugapa (greed).
The Leader caught up with the pair for a chat and a photo at Toniroz Grill in Slave Lake On Aug. 13. Abrenica said he’s enjoying the experience of touring Canada, learning lots and also enjoying being mostly anonymous. The two are recognizable stars in their home country.
“What I like the most are the people (that he’s met here),” said Abrenica. He mentioned specifically the local Bias and Ducusin families, who he said are taking good care of him and Raval. Also, “the locals are friendly and helpful.”
Raval said she’s impressed by how different society seems in Canada from what she’s accustomed to, with “no poor and no rich” in evidence.
Abrenica said he had been feeling sad that so many of his countrymen and women were leaving home to work in foreign countries. But from what he’s seen of the Filipinos in Canada, “they seem happy.”
Tickets for the Sept. 2 show can be purchased at Toniroz.
