A step in the right direction

Good for the Town of Slave Lake for moving ahead with a new set of requirements for new construction aimed at reducing susceptibility to fire.
Of course it is costly. Passing costs on to future builders is not easy and shouldn’t be done lightly. But the risks of doing nothing are also not to be taken lightly.

The same could be said for allowing building on flood plains. The risks are as bad (some say worse) than of fires. Why allow people to keep building in areas susceptible to flooding? There’s no need to punish those who already do, but surely governments can see to it that future developments are safer.
That’s the thinking behind the new FireSmart provisions and it’s a step in the right direction.
