Beautiful gardens, 2025

Caroline Wagenaar and her husband Dan Tarney live in a cabin in Marten Beach. Wagenaar’s passion for gardening came from her mother. Her grandmother studied horticulture in Holland.

“I’ve always gardened too,” says Wagenaar.

Asked what makes it rewarding owning your own garden, Wagenaar says, “It’s good for my mental health.” As for the challenges, it is keeping the weeds away.

In Wagenaar’s garden are a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers.

Caroline Wagenaar poses in her favourite area of her garden on June 30.
Closeup of tomatoes. These are in the early stages of ripening and by the looks of it, they won’t be ready for awhile!
Purple salvias. Hummingbirds are known to like these flowers.
These flowers are called pink calla lily. They are also be referred to as ‘pink melody.’
Lots of green! Wegenaar likes to call this her kitchen garden. There are carrots, pumpkins, lettuce and parsnips. She goes out and uses the garden for inspiration.
Red geraniums. These were on display outside on her deck.
Nemesia flowers are known to be vibrant in colour and have fragrant blooms. These ones have combination of pink and purple.
The metal framing in the centre allows pumpkin leaves to grow freely. Behind the frame are more fruits and vegetables.
