Who knew truck drivers were in such short supply? You sure wouldn’t guess it by the number of trucks on the highway. Somebody must be driving them!
But according to Matthew Holden of Alberta Labour & Immigration, “We are currently short approximately 11,000 drivers.” He goes on to say this is “magnified in our northern communities, because everything we consume or produce in our region is transported on our highways.”
Holden is hoping to organize an information session for some time later this year, on attraction and retention of drivers in the area, “and to help facilitate a plan to get more drivers hauling our goods.”
As for resources, there are wage supports for truck drivers, Holden continues, in an email sent out on Oct. 13.
