It seemed Tom Tippin was just getting started in his stint as manager at the Gilwood Golf Club. Actually it’s been two seasons, and Tippin announced last week there won’t be a third.
“It is with a great deal of sadness that I need to inform you that Laurie and I have decided not to return to the Club for the 2019 season,” Tippin said in an email he sent around to Gilwood members and others.
This news came just ahead of this week’s annual general meeting (Sept. 19). Finding a new GM will presumably be high on the agenda of that meeting. So will filling vacant board positions, of which there are five.
A letter on the AGM also went out last week. In it, the board encourages members to come out to provide input on various items. These include membership rates, food & beverage (in house vs. leasing out), and others. Help is always needed, it says, in fundraising, marketing, “and spreading the word about our fantastic golf course.”
The meeting is at 7:00 p.m. at the curling rink in Slave Lake. Gilwood president Cory Emes says “anybody is welcome.” You have to be a member to be on the board, but “anybody can help out.”
About Tippin’s departure, Emes says, “We enjoyed having him here. We’ve been through some tough times and he helped get us to where I think we’re turning a corner.”
Tippin says the departure will be “bittersweet. We are glad that we (he and wife Laurie) had the opportunity to experience what a great town Slave Lake is… It is my hope that your support of the club and whoever comes in my place will continue.”
