Northland School Division changed its vision statement from ‘Our students love to come to school in Northland’ to ‘Children First’ at the Sept. 27 board meeting.

This has been translated into Cree and the division is working on translating it into Dene and syllabics.

At the meeting, Vice-Chair Robin Guild made a motion that administration look into the process of changing the division’s logo.

The logo doesn’t make it obvious that Northland is an Indigenous school division, he said. Guild is also a councillor for the M.D. of Opportunity. This municipality has a majority Indigenous population and recently changed their logo.

The new logo makes it obvious that Opportunity is an “Indigenous municipality,” added Guild.

“We just changed it,” said Trustee Aimee McCamon, adding that the division has other priorities it should spend money on.

A new logo won’t cost a lot, said Guild.

Trustee Wally Rude said that if there was to be a new logo it should align with the new vision.

Trustee Jesse Lamouche made sure that the motion on the table was only to have administration look into what it would cost to change the logo and some options.

McCamon asked for a recorded vote.

The board passed the motion with McCamon opposed.
