Christmas is one month away, but with COVID-19 the Christmas activities may look a bit different this year.

The Rotary Club of Slave Lake Public Library has a myriad of activities each month. The vast majority of them are online because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, it has two Christmas events.

In a normal year, the Slave Lake library has pictures with Santa.

This year, Slave Lake library has ‘video call with Santa,’ says program coordinator Suzanne Wilson. On Dec. 5, each child gets five minutes to talk to Santa. The conversation can be recorded and kept as a keepsake. There are a limited spots available. Parents email [email protected] to register their children.

Christmas cookie decoration at the Slave Lake library will be different this year because of COVID-19, Wilson adds. This year, it will be ‘make at home’ kits. The free kits have 12 sugar cookies, icing and sprinkles. To order a kit, register on the library website by Dec. 9. Kits can be picked up Dec. 15 to 17.

Smith Community Library is also getting into the Christmas spirit.

Smith librarian Ruth Reay says, “This year since the kids won’t be able to come into the library for craft activities, I plan on doing Christmas crafts online and then having kits here at the library that they can pick up with everything needed to do at home. Hoping to inspire them and also give back to our community that way.”

The third week in November Reay will start decorating the library for Christmas. One of the restaurants in Smith, Char’s Railway Cafe, donated money to buy an electric fireplace.

“The addition of the fireplace adds a cozy setting to our library,” says Reay.

The Smith library is also planning on entering a float into the “first” Smith Christmas parade. This will be Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. in downtown Smith.

The Kinuso Municipal Library is in the Kinuso School, says Big Lakes County’s website. As such it isn’t open to the public, but people can pick up books using curbside pickup.

Flatbush is only open by appointment at the moment. People can make their appointments within the following hours: Tuesday 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Slave Lake library is open Monday to Friday. The hours vary. Monday and Friday it is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday it is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Smith library is open Tuesday 12:30 to 6:30 p.m., Wednesday 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., and Thursday 1 to 4 p.m.

The Slave Lake library is closed Dec. 24 to 26.

The Smith Library is closed Dec. 24 to Jan. 4.
