Big Lakes County has allowed a Faust community group to carry over a 2020 capital grant into 2021, in order to complete projects that were delayed.

At its Jan. 13 meeting, council approved a motion by councillor Robert Nygaard to carry over the $12,939 grant to the Faust Community League.

“It was a wet spring and work was delayed,” Nygaard said.

The organization is working to install a new backstop for a softball diamond, as well as adding new bleachers and repairing an aging outdoor ice rink.

“The skating rink is about 80 per cent complete,” Nygaard said. He added that the projects were further delayed by the corona virus pandemic.

Nygaard noted that an application for carry-over was also delayed, after the society elected a new president and treasurer at its annual general meeting.
Other council members supported the request.

“We are so rigid with our deadlines,” said councillor Fern Welch. “We have to make some exceptions from time to time.”

Reeve Ken Matthews was also sympathetic.

“We have to remember they are volunteers,” he said.

The original deadline on the work was Oct. 31. Council heard that the application for the extension was received on Dec. 15.

A carry-over does not follow policy, council heard, and would require and amendment to the 2021 budget.
