Can anybody beat these guys? The competitive angling team of Josh Courtorielle and Aaron Van Hoek won the Anglers Cup on June 21. That makes two in a row for the Slave duo, on top of their victory a few weeks ago in the Larry Dahlgren Memorial.
That wasn’t the only thing identical to the 2023 Anglers Cup (the last time it was held); it had the same number of entries, at 34. According to one of the organizers, it took a last-minute rush of registrations to get there.
The weather was decent, and the fishing – at least for some of the teams – was quite good. The winning team’s weight-in-walleye total over two days and eight fish was 37.64 lbs. For that they won $15,000.
Placing second was the team of Peter Caputo and Drew Chalifoux, with a two-day total weight of 37.40 lbs.
The biggest fish caught in the tournament was an 8.78 lb. whopper, by the Todd Vekved and Blair Kerr team. They only weighed in four fish, but they were big, averaging 7.19 lbs, and good for 18th place overall.
The Anglers Cup also awarded prizes for top youth team – named in memory of Joe ‘Walleye’ McDougall, and for top mixed team. Greg and Luke Kubel and Lyle Schaffrick and Ginya Grenier were the winners.
