On March 19, 2023, at approximately 7 p.m., High Prairie, Faust, and Red Earth Creek RCMP responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on Highway 750, eight kilometers south of Highway 88. Five people were killed when a pickup truck and a minivan collided.

According to a news release from the High Prairie RCMP, initial reports suggest the truck was travelling north on 750, about eight kilometres from Hwy. 88, when it collided with the southbound van.

“Both occupants of the pickup, a 36-year-old male resident of Loon Lake and a 30-year-old female resident of Slave Lake, were deceased at the scene,” says the release.

Three of the four occupants of the van were killed. A five-year-old child survives in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Dead are a 65-year-old woman, a 51-year-old woman and an 11-year-old boy, all from Whitefish Lake First Nation.

The highway was blocked for several hours while the RCMP deployed a collision reconstructionist. Police are also looking into the role that alcohol may have played in the incident.
