Fungus in need of controlling

Concerns have been expressed in the community about the black knot fungus on mayday trees generally, and at the Slave Lake Healthcare Centre in particular. This is one of the badly infected ones by the hospital.
There has been a bit of progress, however, the hospital has controlled the fungus on at least one tree (photo on right), but there are many more still in need of trimming.

Controlled fungus

This tree, also by the hospital, has been trimmed down to remove the black knot fungus. This is the proper treatment, but it is important for people to realize that the wood and the fungus need to be disposed of properly, by burying or burning. The best times are when the tree doesn’t have leaves, so the fungus is easier to see.
