Twenty members of the Roland Michener Rams wrestling team took part in a major tournament in Edmonton at the University of Alberta ‘Butterdome’ on Feb. 3. Although participation was down by about 20 per cent due to bad weather and roads, there were still a lot of teams in attendance, says Rams’ coach Ian Doetzel.
Leading the way for the Rams were Zane Fillion-Lightening, who took top spot out of 11 wrestlers, and Hailie Kelly, who took first in a field of seven.
Ruben Burton and Ty Kubel, Oscar Horsman and Alanna Fillion-Lightening each took fifth place in their respective categories.
Fillion-Lightening “wrestled extremely well,” says Doetzel, “and was one win off from a bronze medal.”
All of the wrestlers performed well, Doetzel adds, having trained very hard in preparation.
The next tournament for the Rams is in Sexsmith Feb. 22 – 24. This tournament is a province-wide (excluding Edmonton and Calgary) qualifier for provincials.
